A questionnaire of necessary automobile related research projects

Duoclieudongy is aiming for research cooperation with stakeholders in Asian countries. To achieve this objective, we would like to understand the needs of research projects in your country by completion of a questionnaire on the Duoclieudongy website. If you answer the whole questionnaire, it may take around 15 minutes. If you answer "very necessary" or "necessary", please let us know the financial feasibility as far as you can share it with us. This questionnaire includes 5 research areas.
Feedback of the questionnaire will be analyzed from the viewpoint of feasibility. The answers are confidential and we will not use them for any other purposes.

(1) Research on fuel quality monitoring system
For air quality improvement, emission regulation has been enhanced in Asian countries. Appropriate fuel quality management is a pre-requisite to maintain performance of emission reduction devices and fuel-line materials. Results of efficient fuel quality check enable to us to consider needs and effective countermeasures for fuel quality monitoring.

(2) Research on emission volume estimation for air quality improvement
Traffic flow data and emission factor data enable us to estimate emission volume. Upgraded databases of emission factors from chassis-dynamometer tests and traffic flow simulations by the latest traffic counts could approach real-world emission volume in an effective way at city level.

(3) Research on the impact of various measures by simulation of air quality
Implementation of countermeasures seems to be an urgent need under the severe air pollution issue in large Asian cities. Air quality simulation can evaluate impacts from emission volume and traffic flow. The simulation includes evaluation of impact on fuel consumption and CO2 reduction for overall assessment.

(4) Research on health effect risks caused by vehicle emission substances
An increase of health effects caused by air pollution seems to be a growing concern in Asian cities with increasing motorization. This research supports discussion on health effect mitigation by inhalation tests involving animals, assessment of hazardous properties by cultivated cells and epidemiology.

(5) Research on noise reduction measures
An increase of traffic volume in large cities causes traffic noise and may threaten public health. This research collects information of measures on the study of noise reduction by road traffic noise simulation with consideration of traffic flow in large cities.

2. Active Safety/Passive Safety
(1) Research on methodology of assessment/experiments for crash safety
Due to rapid motorization in accordance with economic growth, the number of traffic accidents is increasing. This research project examines crash test methods in frontal, side and rear end collisions,compatibility assessment, pedestrian protection, motorcyclist protection and assessment of child safety seats, etc.

(2) Training on brake performance tests on the TRIAS*
This is practical training of TRIAS-11 on brake performance. The training allows a better view of required facilities, measuring equipment, situation of driver education, etc. This experience helps the design of test certification institutes, purchase of testing facilities and work content in participating countries.

(3) Training on scientific investigation/expert opinion of traffic accidents
Scientific investigation/expert opinion of traffic accidents should be anticipated in the future. This technical training provides various patterns of crash tests on accidents of pedestrians/bicycles/motorcycles. The technical training course aims at improving the skill of scientific investigation and on-the-spot inspection conducted by related officers such as traffic police in Asian countries. The lecture provides engineering know-how of scientific investigation and crucial points of on-the-spot inspection.

3. Electric Vehicles/Fuel Cells
(1) Research on energy consumption assessment of EV / HEV / PHEV
Research on special issues and solutions for EV / HEV / PHEV*: assessment of fuel consumption, electricity consumption and emissions, etc. with high reproducibility.

(2) Research on performance assessment on accumulators

4. Intelligent Transport Systems
(1) Development of truck platooning
This is a platooning of three or four Heavy Duty Trucks cruising at 4 -10 meter intervals at 80km/h on expressways. An autonomous control system with vehicle-to-vehicle communication enables the trucks to share information without any additional infrastructure. This platooning contributes to the rationalization of logistics, reduction of air resistance and road occupancy, which in turn leads to CO2 reduction.

(2) Research on a center-less probe
This is a system on how to obtain traffic information by using a probe car efficiently without telecommunication infrastructure which requires huge time and cost. A center-less traffic information system by vehicle-to-vehicle communication can catch, generate and provide traffic information. It is especially useful in times of emergency/disaster; for example it can provide and exchange information continuously by vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

(3) Consulting and assessment on functional safety of vehicle electrical parts
Due to the computerization of vehicles, manufacturing cost hikes and lack of R&D investment, quality deterioration might be issues. Especially defects of ECU* and control programs would become an important issue from the point of safety. Dealing with this issue, it is anticipated that functional safety standard ISO26262 will be introduced. This project includes a consultant and assessment activities on functional safety ISO 26262 for automotive electronic system development.

5. Others
(1) Research on policies of energy saving and CO2 reduction
The research evaluates policy implementation on automotive energy and air pollution reduction by fuel economy improvement, natural gas/bio fuels, and dissemination of clean energy vehicles. This research contributes to the survey in order to reduce air pollution as well as reduce energy and CO2.

(2) Research on policies on ELVs* and recycle systems
In accordance with the number of vehicles, the number of ELVs appears to increase. This research conducts field research to understand the actual process of ELVs. Based on the results, it proposes an appropriate ELVs processing system without illegal dumping and environmental pollution.

(3) Research on comparative study of policies
While vehicle technology is widespread worldwide, policies (regulation and systems) differ between countries. The system should be updated according to motorization. The comparative study is a policy database by country at a glance. It can give an idea of necessary future measures for a sustainable automobile society.

(4) Research on energy saving measures by LCA*
This research proposes the establishment of an LCA database based on Japanese experience. This project evaluates dissemination of evaluation methods,and countermeasures of energy saving by LCA for new energy vehicles.

(5) Research on the future of motorcycles in large cities
Motorcycles could play an important role of transport in large Asian cities because of rapid dissemination with economic growth. This study focuses on current status of ownership, usage and distribution of second hand motorcycles. Based on the past and the current status, future motorcycle ownership is estimated. The study will also analyze potential usefulness of motorcycles in the future.
